Principals Address
Dear Parents and Carers,
Our class meetings have started. These are a great opportunity for parents to meet the classroom teacher and learn about the routines of the class. This is also your chance to ask questions of a general nature. If its specific to your child, then arranging an appointment is best. The coming class meetings next week are:
Monday 17 Feb – Room 1 at 3.15pm. Ms Vanmaris
Thursday 20 Feb – Room 4 at 3.10pm. Mr Corson and Mr Davison
Friday 21 Feb – Centre 1 - Mrs Heales at the P&C Welcome BBQ to answer questions not already answered in booklet sent home.
Exciting news. The P&C is hosting a welcome sausage sizzle BBQ in the Early Childhood area. This will be open to all parents, students and staff. So, save the date: Friday 21 Feb 3.15pm.
This year’s P&C fundraising raising projects are to raise money for our new Year 1 to 3 playground to be installed along the oval side of the Science room, pay for one bus to Denmark for our Interschool Athletics Carnival and our 2026 student online subscriptions to Mathletics, Reading eggs, Reading Xpress and Mathseeds.
Have a great weekend.
Mr Darryn Martin
Principal
News from Ms Pedretti & Ms Lilly
There are a range of supports we have put in place at Little Grove to provide a positive and safe learning environment for our students based on the Berry St Education Model PL we have engaged in over the last 18 months. Shaped by 140 years of experience, decades of research and thousands of dedicated teachers, the Berry Street Education Model helps educators gain new perspectives, strategies and skills to build safer, healthier and more engaging classrooms for all students. Our classroom strategies that are being embedded during 2025 include:
Welcome circles
Our check-in activity we do every morning with our whole class.
Ready to Learn scales
Each classroom has a 5 point Ready to Learn scale visual for students and the teacher to refer to explicitly so students can learn to recognise when they need to use regulation strategies.
Brain Breaks
We all use these during the day every day to either calm/regulate OR energise students, as required, so they can engage best with their learning.
Plenaries
The bell chimes 10 mins before the end of the school day to remind us to run an end of day plenary/review session with our classes because that is a high impact teaching strategy.
Knowing students well
We ask for student feedback & offer students choice where appropriate to engage them in their learning. Week 1 of every year we get to know our students well through a range of activities.
Ready to Learn Plans
Each class has a Ready to Learn Plan of agreed upon strategies that students can choose from to get themselves ready to learn when they've identified that they're not quite ready on the Ready to Learn Scale.
Restorative Conversations
We always hold restorative conversations and repair relationships after unexpected behaviour occurs.
Other classroom strategies we all employ include:
Using our explicit teaching framework to teach
Referring to our LGPS Expectations regularly and explicitly
Having classroom daily timetables (that our teachers & students to refer to during the day)
Creating language rich environments (eg a dynamic Word Wall)
There are a range of other strategies in our 'arsenal' that we use as well. But these are our non-negotiables.

AUSLAN & Signs of the week
Sign language was introduced to Australia by British and Irish immigrants in the 1800s. Since that time, Auslan has evolved into the modern language used today.
It is important to note that although there are similarities to other sign languages, Auslan is unique to Australia. In fact, within Australia there are two dialects: Northern and Southern. Here in WA, the Deaf community most often use the Southern Dialect. Most of the Auslan students will be learning at Little Grove will be from the Southern dialect.
