Principal’s Address
Dear Parents and Carers,
Next week we have a variety of events to support harmony and inclusivity. So, I thought I'd share some information of where these events came from.
The Easter Hat Parade (also known as the Easter Bonnet Parade) began in New York in the 1870s as a fashion event in which attendees would flaunt their finest clothing and, particularly, flamboyant hats.
Auslan Day is now an annual event to celebrate the publication of the Auslan dictionary, and also to celebrate Auslan and teach others about the language. It is estimated that 16,000 people in Australia now use Auslan.
Harmony Day (21 March 2025) is part of Harmony Week, which celebrates Australia's amazing cultural diversity. During this week, schools celebrate inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for all Australians, from the traditional custodians of the land to those who have come from many countries around the world.

Thanks,
Mr Darryn Martin
Principal
Premiers Reading challenge
Embark on an epic reading journey and be in the running to win weekly prizes in the Premier's Reading Challenge.
The Premier’s Reading Challenge encourages students to discover the joy of reading, improve their literacy skills and enjoy amazing stories.
The challenge runs for 12 weeks from 7 April to 27 June 2025. To complete the challenge:
Kindergarten to Year 10 students read 12 or more books
Year 11 and 12 students read 6 or more books.
Reading isn’t just about books. Students can also log:
short stories
graphic novels
eBooks
talking books
poetry
audiobooks
literary-based podcasts.
There’s something to read at any age or reading level.
Students who log their reading achievements each week have the chance to win exciting prizes! These weekly rewards recognise their dedication to the challenge, motivating them to enhance their reading skills while fostering a lifelong love of reading.
At the end of the challenge, students receive a certificate signed by the Premier, celebrating and rewarding their amazing efforts.
Benefits of the challenge
Reading offers many benefits and the Premier’s Reading Challenge makes it even more exciting! The challenge encourages reading, gives students a goal to work towards and nurtures a lifelong love of books.
Parents play a key role in developing great reading habits. The challenge gives families a fantastic chance to read together. Reading is a wonderful way to unwind, escape to new worlds and discover incredible authors.
So, grab a book and get ready for this year’s challenge!

Room 8 News
Not so long ago, in a galaxy far, far away, there was a planet called Room 8.
In Room 8, the students studied the solar system, planets, and how earthquakes and volcanoes change the Earth. They also studied how meteor impacts form craters.

The students on the planet of Room 8 made models to represent earthquakes and layers of the Earth.
Room 8 students made rockets and projectile launchers to hurl large spaceships and small foam balls at impressive distances.
Once these students on the planet Room 8 began to understand the science of planets, it was time to design their own. They created the planets and wrote creative information to inform others about their new worlds. Some of the planets were hospitable, and others were deadly gas giants.
Chappy’s Corner
Children's University has started at LGPS! I have already had some students bring in their pass ports and show the work they have achieved.
Last week the students enrolled will have received:
Their Children's University Passport (with online log in details)

An Easter Holiday Activity Booklet
A local City of Albany Nature Passport (with Albany specific activities)

As well as all of this there are also some other exciting activities that have been organised for the Holiday break, this information will have been sent to your email addresses. For each of these activities you will need to book a FREE online ticket to attend.
Important Information:

AUSLAN
Easter is fast approaching, and we have begun to prepare in the Auslan Room. Here are the signs of the week.
We are all excited to celebrate Auslan Day next week in class. I would like to remind everyone that students are encouraged to wear their favourite colour. They can participate on both days but extra encouragement is there for their specific Auslan Day.

The overall carnival winner was Yakamia. They will move up to Division A Swimming Carnival next year, while Mt Lockyer will join Flinders Park, Spencer Park, and Little Grove Primary School in the B Division Swimming Carnival for 2026.
A big thank you to all the parents who came along and supported their children at the swimming carnival. Without your support and the positive attitude, you foster around swimming, our students wouldn't have done so well.
Just a friendly reminder for Year 3 students: if they would like to try out for the Interschool Swimming Team in 2026, they will need to be in Stage 6 and be able to swim 25 meters confidently.
Keep up the amazing swimming, everyone!
