BOOK WEEK

It has been another busy and exciting time at our school, with plenty happening across our community. We have thoroughly enjoyed celebrating Book Week, with students embracing the opportunity to share their love of reading, explore new stories and characters, and celebrate the wonderful world of books. A big thank you to our families for supporting the celebrations and helping our students get involved.

I would also like to extend my sincere thanks to all of the parents and families who supported the camp fundraising cake stall. Your generosity, time and delicious contributions made the stall a great success, and we are very grateful for your ongoing support of our students.

INTERSCHOOL SPELLING COMPETITION

On Monday, we are looking forward to welcoming schools from across the Great Southern to Little Grove for the Interschool Spelling Competition, and we wish all participants the very best.

On Thursday our Year 6 students are spending the morning at NASHS enjoying a Transition morning. This provides them with an opportunity to experience the next step in their educational journey.

Finally, a reminder that our Learning Journey Evening will take place on Thursday from 4:00pm to 6:00pm. The classes will open at 4:00pm and close at 5:40pm. This is a wonderful opportunity for families to visit classrooms; celebrate student learning and see the fantastic work our students have been completing. We look forward to seeing many of you there. Last year we followed a learning journey map, we will be doing the same this year, so make sure you get stamps as you move around the school. We will collect these in the undercover area. At 5:45 we will all meet at the Undercover area for a presentation and music performance.

With our Athletics Carnival just around the corner, this week's focus on Build Resilience is a great reminder to have a go, give things your best effort and demonstrate good sportsmanship.

Whether you're racing for first place, trying something new, cheering on a friend or encouraging your faction, it's all about giving things a go and being proud of your effort. Remember, resilience isn't about always winning — it's about getting back up, trying again and supporting others along the way.

Students have been writing their own suspense stories based on the story, Kassim and the Greedy Dragon. They have also had lots of fun starting to make their greedy dragons to go with the story. If you see a student from Room 5 ask them to tell you the story, they know it off by heart!

We have been learning about lots of interesting things in Mathematics. We started off with how to tell the time, so we’ll never be late again and even made our own clocks! Next, we learnt how to add up money and make change so we can spend our pocket money on some yummy food from the canteen. Finally, we started learning about chance and probability this week with the story, The Giraffe Ate My Homework.

In Design and Technology, we have been learning about how food and fibre is grown and transported to our homes. It has been very interesting learning about how cows are milked and how the milk is turned into other products! We have also learnt where wool comes from and what plants need to grow. The students have started designing their own labels for a food or fibre product and are very excited to make them in the coming weeks.

There have been two spelling competition running at Little Grove this term.

Our school faction spelling bee and the Prime Minister's Spelling bee.

On Monday Little Grove are hosting the Great Southern Interschool Spelling Bee final. This will take place in the undercover area. We have thirteen terrific spellers representing our school. They are Saskia, Phoebe, Thomas M, Charlie D, Jack, Leo G and Poppy participating in the year 3/4 competition and Lyla, Florence, Scarlett, Ellis, Nina and James H in the year 5/6 competition. Thanks to Amanda G who is helping us mark on Monday. If you have a couple of hours spare, please let Mrs Lily know as she would love the help.

The second competition is the Prime Ministers Spelling Bee. 

We are thrilled to celebrate the fantastic achievements of our students in this. Our students have shown an impressive commitment to learning, building their vocabulary and developing their spelling skills. It has been wonderful to see their confidence grow as they challenged themselves and competed against other talented young spellers.

We are especially proud to announce that six of our students have progressed through to the State Finals! Well done Thomas, James H, Saskia T, Charie D, Jack P and Ellis C.  This is an outstanding achievement and a wonderful recognition of their hard work, perseverance and love of words. We wish our six finalists the very best as they take on the next challenge, and we know they will represent our school with pride. Congratulations to all of our students who participated — your enthusiasm and effort are something to be celebrated!

The Sign of the Week is “Go”. This week we will be communicating about “going” to a farm or zoo. It is important to note that the action of “going” is often communicated through pointing and depiction. This is where we show rather than tell. I hope you get to “go” somewhere exciting this week.

Our Jumps & Throws Carnival will be held on Tuesday, 8 September.

Event Schedule:

All students are expected to participate in the Javelin, T-Ball and Long Jump events.

The Triple Jump and 800m are optional events. Students have selected these events during their PE lessons.

We look forward to a great day of competition and encourage all students to participate, have fun and try their best!

New this year! We are excited to introduce a 100m Parent Relay at our Faction Athletics Carnival on Friday, 11 September.

We are looking for 8 parents to take part in the relay. The parent team will compete against a Year 6 team, an LGPS staff team and a team of NASHS helpers.

It’s sure to be a fun and exciting race! If you would like to be one of our 6 parent runners, please let us know by emailing [email protected] or pop by and have a chat with Kristy at Fitness Club on Monday or Thursday mornings.

🖼️ LGPS P&C Logo Design Competition ✍️

We are in need of a refresh of the P&C logo, so we are currently running a competition and we want you to show us what you think the P&C is all about and what makes us so special.

If you haven’t received a copy of the rules and guidelines, please head to the office to pick up your copy.

The winner of the logo design will receive a prize and the amazing opportunity to have their design showcased in all our P&C organised events, t-shirts, and other marketing materials.

A very special Little Grove shout-out to former student Mitch McGovern, who is currently lining up for the Carlton Blues and is heading into the 2026 AFL Finals! 🎉

Mitch has had an outstanding season, finding his feet in a new role up forward and kicking a career-best 33 goals along the way. What an achievement! From his days playing football here in Albany to running out on the big AFL stage, it’s pretty special to see one of our former students reaching such incredible heights. We are so proud to see where the hard work, talent and determination of our Little Grove kids can take them!

Congratulations, Mitch — we’ll be cheering you on from Little Grove! 💚💙

Looking for something to do this weekend? Want to support our younger generation and their brilliant ideas?

Well, here’s a lovely excuse to get out of the house! Head on down to the Progress Hall and support some of our very own Little Grove legends as they hold their own little fair/garage sale event! It’s a great chance to wander, have a browse, grab a bargain and, most importantly, show our kids that our community is behind them. So pop down, say hello and give these young entrepreneurs some support!

We love seeing our Little Grove kids getting out there and giving things a go!
