Principal’s Address

School Development Day and Long Weekend

A reminder that tomorrow Friday 29 May is a School Development Day and students do not attend school. With Monday 1 June being a Public Holiday, we hope you can enjoy an extra-long weekend and look forward to seeing you back at school on Tuesday 2 June.

Faction Cross Country

Next Friday 5 June is our Faction Cross Country. Mrs Upchurch has been emphasising the importance of all students trying their best, and we look forward to seeing some excellent running on the day. Events are scheduled to start at 11.15am. A schedule has been sent out; however we do remind all families that event times are subject to change should we need to make adjustments based on weather conditions.

Change of Dates Term 3

As posted yesterday via compass, we have made some adjustments to the dates of several Term 3 activities. Following feedback from families last year regarding a number of major events occurring within a short period of time, we have worked to spread events more evenly across the term. However, after receiving confirmation that the Music Festival will be held on Wednesday 16 September and Thursday 17 September, we have reviewed our calendar and made the following changes:

· Learning Journey Night will now be held on Thursday 3 September.

· Athletics Carnival will now be held on Friday 11 September (Jumps and Throws Tuesday 8 September).

As always, students remain at the centre of our decision-making, and these changes have been made to maximise participation, minimise scheduling pressures, and ensure our students can fully engage in each event.

Kindergarten Enrolments 2027

Thank you to families for getting your applications through to our front office. Please feel free to share with friends and family that that we are now accepting Kindy applications for 2027. If your child is born between July 1 2022 and June 30 2023, they are eligible to enrol at LGPS for 2027. The application window will be open throughout Term 2, and close early in Term 3. At which stage we will then review all applications and advise parents of a position by the end of August. If you would like to apply to enrol your child at LGPS, please follow the link below. Little Grove Learners’ Behaviour Flowchart

Our school is committed to providing a safe, caring, inclusive and culturally responsive environment where all students can learn and succeed. Guided by the Western Australian Department of Education's Student Behaviour in Public Schools Policy, we promote positive behaviour, respectful relationships and a strong sense of belonging. While our practices align with Department requirements, we recognise that every school community is unique and therefore implement our approach in a way that is responsive to the needs of our students, staff and school community.

So here at Little Grove we have many tailored systems and initiatives in place that encourage students to make positive choices and demonstrate our four school expectations each day. While most of the time students meet these expectations, we also recognise the importance of having a clear and consistent approach when behaviours become unproductive. To support this, the Little Grove Learners’ Behaviour Flowchart is used across all areas and contexts of the school and is displayed in every learning environment.

The flowchart provides staff with a calm, consistent and supportive process for responding to behaviour concerns. It also ensures that the language and expectations used are familiar to both staff and students, helping everyone understand what is expected and what steps may occur if behaviour choices impact learning, safety or wellbeing.

By using a shared whole-school approach, we aim to support students in developing self-regulation, responsibility and positive behaviour choices while maintaining respectful and productive learning spaces for all students.

BEHAVIOUR FOCUS

This week our behaviour focus is SHOWING RESPECT, especially during musters and assemblies. We encourage students to listen carefully, follow instructions, use kind manners, and represent our school with pride. Thank you to the many students already showing these positive behaviours every day.

RECONCILIATION WEEK

Commemorating National Reconciliation Week and National Sorry Day in primary schools is an important way to help students develop understanding, empathy and respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, histories and cultures. These occasions provide valuable opportunities for students to learn about Australia’s shared history, reflect on the past, and consider how we can all contribute to reconciliation and stronger relationships within our communities. By engaging students in meaningful conversations and activities, schools play an important role in fostering inclusivity, understanding and respect from a young age.

We were incredibly fortunate to welcome Aunty Eliza to our school to work with the Year 4, 5 and 6 students. Aunty Eliza shared her personal experiences and spoke about the Stolen Generations and the impact these policies had on her family and community. She also discussed the importance of reconciliation and what we can all do moving forward to create a more respectful and understanding future. Students greatly valued the opportunity to listen to her stories, ask questions and connect with her on a personal level. To conclude the session, Aunty Eliza made damper with the students and spent time interacting with them one-on-one, creating a memorable and meaningful experience for all involved.

Storytime session

On Wednesday 27 May, all of our junior classes came together to participate in the 2026 National Simultaneous Storytime session. We had a wonderful time sharing the story about Luna the Soccer Roo, who showed great resilience and determination throughout her journey. The students thoroughly enjoyed listening to the story in a big group, making it a memorable experience for everyone involved. We continue to explore all ways of encouraging reading and storytelling with our students.

ROOM 6 ASSEMBLY - Highway to Oz Rocks the Stage! 🎸

Room 6 absolutely brought the house down this week with their fantastic performance of Highway to Oz! We’re fairly certain Angus Young (Eddie) himself must have been flown in overnight, with some spectacular rock moves lighting up the stage! Phil Rudd (Chappy) also made a memorable appearance, complete with some very impressive hair! 🤘🎤

A huge well done to all of Room 6 for getting up on stage, rocking out, having fun and absolutely wowing the audience. What an amazing way to kick off our Tuesday morning — you had everyone smiling from start to finish!

HONOUR CERTIFICATES

A huge congratulations to Griffyn H, Sage S, Zoey W, Molly K, Lennon R, Roger C, Flynn T, Beau E, Lillian M, Archie S, Caroline P, Rosie J, Charlie W, Anna M, Eddie J, Eliza K, Brock W, Anya S, Isla T, Ella K and Miles L for receiving an Honours Certificate for their hard work and dedication this term. We are incredibly proud of you all — keep up the fantastic work!

AUSSIE OF THE MONTH

A huge congratulations to Libby on receiving our Aussie of the Month award! This special award recognises students who are nominated and voted for by both peers and staff for their kindness, positivity and the way they support those around them.

Libby is the kind of person who makes others feel cared for, included and never alone, and we are incredibly proud of the kindness and compassion she shows every day. Well done Libby — what a wonderful and well-deserved achievement!

AUSLAN

SIGN OF THE WEEK

This week we are looking at simple time expressions and how they are placed within Auslan grammar structure. The sign of the week is TODAY

It is very important that this sign is located above the shoulder to ensure it’s meaning is clear. If placed in front of the body the mean changes to “What”.

SPORTS CORNER

FACTION CROSS COUNTRY CARNIVAL

This year, our Faction Cross Country Carnival will be held on Friday 5th June from 11:15 – 1:15.

Parents and Guardians are encouraged to come and watch students participate. However, to ensure that the carnival runs smoothly, we ask that all parents/visitors stay out of the student area (area to the side of the playground) and do not cross the Cross-Country track at any time.

These times are all approximate times, and I suggest that you arrive at least 15 minutes prior to the scheduled time to ensure that you get to see your child run. Last year, the event ran much quicker than expected.

If the weather is not suitable, we will notify parents via SMS on the day, and the Cross-Country events will be run during normal PE lessons or at a lunch time to finalise the Interschool team.

The Interschool Cross Country team will be for students in Year 3-6 on Friday 19th June (Wk 9). This year, the host schools are Mt Lockyer Primary School and Great Southern Grammar, and the event will be held at neutral grounds due to the private schools joining the public schools for the Albany Interschool event. This event will be held at Centennial Park - Eastern Precinct (Junior Football oval in front of clubrooms). This means there will now be around 70 students in a race, compared to 40 students in previous years. The top five runners of each gender per year level (Year 3-6) will be invited to represent our school at the Interschool Cross Country.

In PE lessons and at Fitness Club, I have been focusing on each individual student trying their best with a positive “I can do it” attitude. Students are aiming to improve on their own Personal Best (PB). Over the coming weeks, students will have four opportunities to be timed running the course in PE lessons which will give them a PB. This year individual results will be made available to all students in Year 1-6 in the undercover area.

If your child is in Year 1-6, please encourage them come to Fitness Club on Monday and Thursday mornings, where students can practice their running and build up their stamina for the upcoming Cross-Country Carnival. Students are training to be able to complete the following number of laps of the school oval which is equivalent to the distance that they will run on the carnival day: Year 1/2 - 3 laps, Year 3/4 - 5 laps and Year 5/6 - 6 laps.
