Principal’s Address

School Board

We are currently seeking an enthusiastic parent representative to join the LGPS Board. A School Board Parent Representative provides a parent perspective in school decision-making and helps ensure the interests of students and families are considered. They work with the principal, staff, and other board members to support the school’s strategic direction and improvement. The School Board’s role is governance rather than day-to-day management. It helps set the school’s vision and priorities; reviews progress against the school plan and supports strong connections between the school and community. Board members may provide advice on policies, budgeting priorities, and school initiatives. Parent representatives also help communicate with the wider parent community and contribute ideas that support positive outcomes for students. We meet once per term on a Tuesday at 3.15pm. If you would like to be considered for this position, please email [email protected]

Should we have more than one nomination, as per Department of Education guidelines, we would need to move to a formal voting process where we would invite the school parent community to vote and elect the new parent member.

In this space, I would like to officially welcome James Leiper as our new School Board Chair. James and I attended School Board training on Tuesday, and it has been great to see the enthusiasm and passion he has for the school and the school community. I know James is going to provide great leadership, following on from the impressive work Julie de Jong contributed as Chair over a long period.

WELCOME MR JAMES LEIPER

NAPLAN

On Wednesday 11 March, NAPLAN (National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy) Testing commences for our Year 3 and 5 students. Tests will be conducted nationwide, measuring skills in reading, writing, spelling, grammar and numeracy. These tests help schools and governments monitor student progress and help to improve teaching and learning. Last year, our results showed us it was time for a new direction in the way we go about our teaching at LGPS. While this testing phase is too early into our new approach to track progress, it will still give us valuable information to support students in our school, as well as longitudinal data to support our long-term vision.

Solar Car Challenge

Congratulations to our team of students who will participate in the interschool Solar Car Challenge on Wednesday 11 March. They have been working hard preparing for the big day and I know they are going to represent our school with pride and passion. All the best!

Ride to School

On Friday 20 March, it is Ride to School Day. We encourage as many students as possible to ride on this day as we promote active transport options in our community.

Assembly

This Tuesday is our first, class assembly, with Room 7 hosting. We look forward to welcoming you into the school to celebrate the success of our students.

PASLET (Positive and Supportive Learning Environment Team)

Behaviour Focuses at Little Grove Primary School

At Little Grove, we are committed to creating a safe, supportive, and positive learning environment where every student can thrive. As part of our Positive Behaviour Support program, we introduce regular Behaviour Focuses for both students and staff.

Each Behaviour Focus highlights an important school expectation that is explicitly taught during our weekly Monday Muster. These expectations are then reinforced in classrooms and across the school. By teaching these expectations directly, we help students understand what positive behaviour looks like in different school settings, why it is important, and how they can be successful members of our school community.

Our Behaviour Focuses are carefully selected by our PASLET team using behaviour and wellbeing data and observations, collected across the school. This ensures we are responding to the needs of our students and providing clear, consistent support where it is most beneficial.

Families play an important role in supporting positive behaviour. We encourage parents and carers to talk with their children about our Behaviour Focuses and celebrate when they demonstrate these positive choices at school. You can find these each week, here in the newsletter.

Week 6 behaviour focus

Next week, Groovy Grover will be focusing on being responsible, especially when we are moving between activities. This means making sure we walk on the pathways and move safely and calmly around the school. When everyone follows this expectation, it helps keep our school safe and organised for all students and staff. Let’s all work together to show how responsible we can be!

BOOK CLUB

Book Club orders are now open! If you would like to place an order, please ensure it is submitted no later than Tuesday 17th March. This will help make sure all orders can be processed on time and avoid any disappointment.

Thank you for your support, and we hope you enjoy browsing this issue’s selection of books!

Room 4 - Class Report

Room 4 has had a busy and engaging week of learning!

In English, students have been exploring the topic of deforestation. They researched the pros and cons of cutting down forests to help them prepare for writing a persuasive text titled “We Must Carefully Protect Our Forests.” Students have been learning how to structure their writing with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion, while also using high modality words such as must, should, need to, and have to, to make their arguments strong and convincing.

In Reading, the class has been enjoying the novel Kensuke’s Kingdom, a story about a boy who becomes marooned on a tropical island. The students have been discussing the characters, setting and themes as the story unfolds. During reading fluency practice, students have also been reading informative texts about deforestation, helping them build both their reading confidence and their understanding of the topic they are studying in English.

In Mathematics, the class has been learning about fractions through hands-on activities. Students searched around the school for real-life examples of fractions and recorded the numerator and denominator they observed. They also explored equivalent fractions in a range of practical situations.

Students have also been learning the nine times table, using helpful strategies as well as practising through a range of engaging maths games.

In HASS, the students have been researching the continent of Africa. This week they created their own maps of Africa and began learning about the incredible Congo Rainforest, one of the world’s most fascinating natural environments. Students discovered the rich wildlife and plant life that live there and discussed how the rainforest is currently under threat from deforestation.

During research time, they were delighted to be visited by a representative from our fabulous P and C, who delivered an icy pole to thank students for their ‘Colour Fun Run’ fund raising efforts this term. Good times!

It has been wonderful to see the students working collaboratively, thinking carefully about their learning, and building their confidence across all areas.

SPORTS CORNER

Get ready for National Ride2School Day on Friday 20 March 2026! 🚲

Students are encouraged to walk, ride, scoot, or skate to school with a friend and enjoy a fun, active start to the day. It’s a great way to build healthy habits, spend time outdoors, and reduce traffic around the school.

Let’s get moving and make the ride to school part of the fun!

As part of our Move Program, we have been invited to take part in a new grant by the Department of Transport and West Cycle called the ‘Walk and Wheel 2 School Program’ to promote active transport to school. We will support this initiative by running active transport events throughout the year, such as Ride to School Day, Walk to School Day, and encouraging participation in Bike Riding Week through our bike education lessons.

Where possible, it would be wonderful if Little Grove families could support and encourage their child to take part in these events. As part of this grant, students who participate in each event will be entered into a daily raffle draw for prizes, as well as a major end-of-year prize valued at $500 to go towards a new bike from one of our local bike shops.

Did you know that a 2021 study from the WA Department of Transport found that only 20% of students actively travel to school? That’s lower than the national average of 25%. We would love to see Little Grove Primary School help change that — let’s work together to make it happen!

Our first event will be Ride to School Day on Friday 20th March., so pump up those tyres and let get riding!

Bike Safety Reminder: Ride a Bike That Fits

This week's Bike Safety Reminder is all about making sure your bike is the right size. Here’s how to tell if a bike fits properly:

·         When standing over the top tube, both feet should be flat on the ground, with some space between your body and the frame.

·         While seated, you should be able to touch the ground with both feet.

·         You should be able to reach the handlebars comfortably, without straining your back or shoulders.

·         Ask for help when buying a bike—check how much the seat and handlebars can be adjusted to grow with you.

·         If your bike has handbrakes, ensure the brake levers are adjusted to your hand size so you can grip them firmly.

If your child is in Room 4, 5, 6, 7 or 8, this is a great opportunity to check that their bike fits properly ahead of their Bike Education sessions at the end of this term.

This is also a reminder to complete the Compass bike permission form if you have a child in Room 4, 5, 6, 7 or 8.
