Principal’s Address
Dear Parents and Carers,
As part of considering the whole child when educating them, we want to improve or maintain good mental health.
As part of this, we are teaching our students to use hope maps when facing struggles or difficulties. So why is hope important?

Studies have shown that a person’s positive expectations for the future are tightly correlated with academic and life success.
So, what does a student or child look like if they are hopeful?
They are excited about something in the future. That one thing can be big or small, novel or run-of-the-mill, close at hand or far in the future as long as it teaches them to look forward with positive expectations. It can be a weekly visit to the park, a family trip, a sporting event, a school disco. This is part of a hopeful mindset that gets young people excited about the future and their future selves. They become more animated and this display of positive emotions attracts attention and support from people who can help them along the way.
Hopeful students have good school attendance. There is a close correlation between excellent attendance and hope.
Hopeful students are engaged. They are psychologically invested in what is happening around them and eager to get something out of classes and other family or community activities.
So how can parents foster hope in partnership with our school?
Give children goals that really matter to them. Nobody washes a rental car. For the same reason, children don’t work hard on goals they don’t own or find meaningful. But goals directly linked to having a good job and a happy family can be highly motivational. Engage children in discussions about their dreams and future goals. Ask them what they want to achieve, why, and what they're looking forward to.
Be patient: everyone has good days and bad days. Help them to remember that things can and will get better. It may just take a little time for things to get sorted out.
Show children how to make when/where plans. Studies have shown that children who decide when and where they will work on and complete a task/job are three to four times more likely to follow through than children whose action plans are vague. Setting action triggers is straightforward. Each time, you give a child a task or set a goal, help them choose the day and time they’ll start working on it, and the place where they’ll work.
Celebrate their success: try to acknowledge their achievements and the fact that they’ve made it through every challenge up until now. Try not to dwell on negative self-talk and remember that it’s OK when things don’t work out as planned, too. (This can help them build resilience to tackle whatever the future holds for them.)
Build a sense of belonging and connection. Encourage children to participate in activities that foster a sense of community and shared purpose. Help them to understand the broader context of their lives and how their actions can impact others. Encourage children to participate in age appropriate volunteer activities that help others.
Have a great weekend!

SCHOOL REMINDERS
Just a gentle reminder please that pets are not allowed on School grounds during school hours. We do have some students with allergies, and others with a fear of dogs. We would like to nuture a safe and caring place for all our students. We kindly therefore, ask that you keep them at the School boundaries if you do bring them down. Many thanks!

SPORTS CORNER
National Walk to School Day – A Big Success!
On Wednesday, 14th May, Little Grove Primary School proudly celebrated National Walk to School Day. It was a gloriously crisp autumn morning—perfect weather for walking, riding, or scooting to school. A huge thank you to all the families who supported this important initiative. It was wonderful to see so many students choosing active and sustainable ways to get to school.
Our results were impressive:
38% of students walked
16% of students rode bikes or scooters
11% of student caught the bus
34% of student travelled by car

Overall, 66% of our students used active transport to get to school—an outstanding effort!
We’d also like to extend a special thank you to the P&C, especially Steph who provided a colourful and delicious selection of fruit and vegetables for our students to enjoy. These healthy treats are always a hit and help start the day off right. Thank you again to everyone who made this day such a success.
Let’s keep moving and stay active!

The interschool event will be held at Centennial Park: Eastern Precinct (near the Junior Football Club rooms and oval). We encourage families to come along and support our athletes!
